This deliciously easy caramelized onion dip is the perfect snack you can make right at home.

As you could imagine this dip is best to enjoy with some crackers, carrot sticks, tortilla chips, celery sticks and pretty much anything that goes well with a dip. It’s also good if you want to use it as a spread in a sandwich or roll. The dip goes great as an easy snack or can easily be worked into another meal.

The longest part of this dish is caramelizing the onions, but it’s super easy to do. You can skip this step if you already have some onions caramelized. You can also look at buying a store-bought variety of caramelized onions to save on time.

One of the best things about making caramelized dip at home is how good it is in comparison to the store-bought varieties. You also have the bonus of adjusting the flavors to more suit your taste buds.

You can keep this caramelized onion dip in the fridge for a few days after making it. This ability to refrigerate is great if you need to prepare ahead for a party and want to reduce your workload of things to do on the day. If you store it in the fridge, then it will thicken up, it will become runnier when it starts to warm up. I highly recommend allowing roughly one hour for the dip to soften.

Cooking Tips:

  • If you’re running low on time, you can mix the hot onion in with the cream cheese and sour cream. It will, however, be quite runny, chilling it in the fridge will thicken it up.
  • If you prefer fewer onion chunks in your dip, then you can dice the onion further after you have caramelized it. Allow it to cool slightly before attempting to dice.
  • It’s important that the cream cheese is at room temperature otherwise the mix may curdle and become quite lumpy.
  • Allowing the dip to sit for a bit will allow for the flavors to develop more. This extra time will leave you with a way better-tasting dip but the extra time is not necessary if you need it fast.
  • You can make this dip gluten-free by simply making sure the Worcestershire sauce you use doesn't contain gluten. You can usually check this by simply reading the label, and it should be mention that it is gluten-free.
